Obituary for
Jacob "Jay" Wood
Durango resident Jacob (Jay) Wood died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 96 years old.
Mr. Wood was born to Willie Wood and Grovey Pearl Knowles on August 20, 1915, in Lohan, Texas. One of five children, Jay grew up in Texas. His family moved to Colorado in 1937, and they settled at Pleasant View in Montezuma County, Colo. That was his home for the next nine years. The family left there in 1946, and moved to the Redmesa near Marvel, Colo., where they cleared land and grew beans.
On November 19, 1938, he married C. Marie Lee in Aztec, N.M. They continued farming with his father until 1950, when he went to work at Vanadium Corp. of America in Durango. After V.C.A. shut down in 1963, Jay worked at Federal Lumber Co., Home Lumber Co., Plaza Lumber Co., and Booker Lumber.
Mr. Wood was a Boy Scout Leader for many years. He loved to camp, hike and fish with his troop.
Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, C. Marie Wood, on April 13, 2012; and his sons Walter Clark Wood and Elmer Eugene Wood.
He is survived by daughter-in-law Betty Wood of Milton, Fla., four grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery.
