Martha Gosney "Evelyn" Wommer
Longtime resident Martha Evelyn Gosney Wommer passed peacefully at her home February 22, 2012, surrounded by family. She was 101.
Evelyn, as she was known to friends and family, was born November 13, 1910, in Byers, Kansas. She grew up crossing the plains of Kansas, Missouri and Colorado. She graduated Byers Rural High School in 1928.
She attended Kansas Community College and received a 2-year business certificate. On a trip home to Byers for a visit, she met a school teacher, William (Bill) Gosney. They married June 21, 1931. They moved to Bayfield, Colo., shortly after.
Evelyn loved her ranch life and being a housewife. She worked hard to create a loving home. In 1937 Wade Gosney was the first of four boys. He was followed by Dan Gosney in 1941, then Don Gosney in 1943, and Ross was born in 1948. Evelyn continued to chase cattle, chickens and boys with William until his death in 1970.
Evelyn was employed by the Bayfield office of the US Forest Service for 25 years and substituted for the Bayfield School District. She was involved in the study group that created the plans for the Bayfield Library. She was an active member in the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Grange for over 25 years, and numerous other clubs.
In March 1975 she married Edwin C. Wommer. They enjoyed the beautiful mountains, traveling and dancing together.
Evelyn will be remembered for her sewing, her wonderful baking, her love of nature and of family.
She is survived by her husband Edwin Wommer of 37 years, her three sons Dan Gosney, Don Gosney, and Ross Gosney, all of Bayfield, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
