Obituary for Ronald Gerhard Wiebel

Ronald Gerhard Wiebel, 72, died Monday, April 14, 2014 at Mercy Regional Medical Center due to natural causes (COPD and bladder cancer) in Durango. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Pastor Tim Orlowski will be officiating. Cremation did occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Ron was born on June 11, 1941 in Lowden, Iowa to Gerhard Carl Herman Wiebel and Esther Viola Hinze Wiebel. He grew up in Davenport, Iowa and attended Trinity Lutheran School and Davenport High School, graduation in 1959.
Ron married to Judith Heuer in 1960, had a son and the marriage ended in divorce. He married Sharon Kay Lewis on January 8, 1965 in Rock Island, Illinois. They had two children, Michael Floyd Wiebel and Christopher Todd Wiebel. Ron moved to Durango in 1972. When Ron moved to Durango, he became co-owner of Coast to Coast Hardware which later became Do it Best. Ron found that he had a job that he really enjoyed and sometimes it didn't even seem like work.
When Woolworth's closed, Ron got their Pop machines moved over to the hardware store, since he had made several trips across the street every day to get Pop.
Ron retired in June 2003 after 31 years with the closing of the hardware store.
Ron is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sharon of Durango, three sons: Scott of Davenport, Iowa; Mike of Arvada (wife, Amanda), Chris of Durango (wife, Kristi), 2 grandsons: Griffin and Jarrett of Arvada; one granddaughter, Nancy Linda of Evanston, Illinois; sisters Eileen Hill and brother in law Donald of Popular Grove, Illinois and Ruth Ann Runge and brother in law Lester of Donahue, Iowa; brother Arthur Wiebel of Davenport, Iowa and four nieces, three nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
Memorials can be sent to the La Plata County Humane Society, 1111 S. Camino del Rio, Durango, Colorado 81303, the Mercy Health Foundation (for the new Hospice residence) at 1010 Three Springs, Blvd., Durango, Colorado 81301 or to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road, Durango, CO 81301 for the Mission Endowment Fund.
