Obituary for Christine M. Westcott

Christine M. Westcott passed away peacefully Monday, July 11, 2011 in her Durango home. She was 54.

Mrs. Westcott was born to John and Rosemary Mahalovich on September 12, 1956 in Gallup, New Mexico. Following graduation from high school, she joined the U.S. Army where she studied nursing through the Walter Reed Institute of Nursing, graduating in the last class in 1978. She met her husband Ken Westcott at Gallup Indian Medical Center, where they both served as nursing supervisors for the United States Public Health Service.

Upon retirement from the military, Mr. and Mrs. Westcott returned to New Mexico for a time, ultimately settling in Colorado on the Florida Mesa south of Durango in 1991. As a couple they enjoyed travel adventures in the motor home, gardening and time with family, friends and their pets. Most recently, a feisty Chihuahua named Lola was Mrs. Westcott's close companion.

An avid reader and intellectual who drafted a military suspense novel in 2003, Mrs. Westcott was a founder of the local writer's group "Durango Inkslingers" in the mid-1990s. She is perhaps best known for the weekly humor column "Reality Bites" she wrote for the Durango Herald and the publication Cross Currents. A woman with a wry sense humor, Mrs. Westcott was a master at finding the absurd and comical in every-day situations. "She was a woman of tremendous strength and compassion with a very big heart B and she certainly could always make us laugh," said her family. In recent years,

Mrs. Westcott had taken up and found deep satisfaction in the visual arts creating pastels and watercolor paintings. Mrs. Westcott is survived by her husband of 28 years, Ken Westcott and son Jason Raysinger of Durango, Co, and her parents of Gallup, N.M.

A graveside service will be held Friday July 15th, at 10 am at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. A Rosary and viewing will be held Thursday evening at 7 pm at Hood Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to La Plata County Humane Society
