After graduation from La Junta High School, he attended Otero Junior College for several terms as a pre-engineering major before deciding to explore other occupations. In 1967, he attended the Electronic Technical Institute in Denver, Colorado earning an Advanced Electronic Technician diploma and a Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Operator License. While in California, he met and married Margaret "Meg" Johnston of Durango in 1971. Wanting to raise their family back home in Colorado, they moved to Mancos in 1981 where Wes and his father built the family home. Meg and Wes raised their three children, and he worked for Colorado Ute Electric, later Tri State G&T, as an electronic specialist until retiring in 2003. From an early age he had a passion for planes and flying, earning his private pilot's license. For 25 years he was fortunate to fly his Cessna 182.
Surviving Wes is his spouse of 53 years, Meg; children, Randy (Carrie) Atkinson of Alamosa and Mike (Diane) Atkinson of Rolla, Missouri; Erin (Ryan) Briscoe of Homer, Alaska; Greg (Andrea) Cummings of Grand Junction; and Alan (Emily) Cummings of Fort Collins; his sister, Elaine Brickel of Lawrence, Kansas; as well as ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
