Mitchell Wells passed away peacefully at his home in Durango, March 23, 2015. A service will be held at Hood Mortuary on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 11am, with burial to follow at Greenmount Cemetery.
Edward Mitchell Wells was born in Deming, NM on April 8, 1929 to John Benjamin and Ruth (Nicholson) Wells. Mitchell graduated from Deming High School in 1947. He went on to UNM in Albuquerque, NM, where he graduated with a degree in Pharmacy in 1951. He was very involved in college, being a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Kappa Psi Honorary Fraternity of the College of Pharmacy. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp, as an officer in the Korean War. In 1951, he married Marie Spencer.
Mitchell served his community in numerous ways. He was Mayor of Grants, NM for 8 years, President of Kiwanis Club, City Councilman, President of Grants-Milan Chamber of Commerce, President of the NM Pharmaceutical Association, board member of Sandia Savings and Loan, board member of Grants State Bank, member of the New Mexico Amigos, as well as serving on the NM State Board of Pharmacy. He also owned and operated a drug store in Grants, NM for 40 years. In 1997, he retired and he and his wife moved to Durango.
Mitchell was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Wells Okes, in 2002 and his grandson Benjamin Okes, in 2007.
Mitchell is survived by his loving wife, Marie Wells; son: John Wells; grandsons: Zane Wells, Grant Wells, and Justin Okes and 4 great grandchildren.
