Doris Walker

d. May 22, 2014

Durango resident, Doris Ruth Walker died Thursday, May 22, 2014 at her home with family. She was 82.
Mrs. Walker was born to James Henry and Ruth Kohler on August 29, 1931, in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Her grandmother delivered her because the doctor was late. She grew up in Arboles and graduated from Ignacio high School in 1950 with a scholarship to the U.S. School of Music.

Doris moved to Durango and went to nursing school at Mercy hospital where she met her love, Merle Walker. They married March 23, 1957 in Aztec, New Mexico. Following Merle’s work as a building contractor they moved to Covina, California. While nursing, she went to El Monte Beauty College and received her cosmetology license. Doris later became a licensed beautician in four states. In 1969, they built one of the first motels in Quartzsite, Arizona, where she ran a beauty shop and laundry.

Having lived many places, Durango was always where she called home. In the summers, she was the nurse and archery instructor at the Girls and boy camp up Florida Road and owned Misty Salon of Beauty on North Main.

Her niece calls her the “rock of the family.” She lived a full life always giving to others and being the caregiver. Mrs. Walker will greatly missed by her family!

Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband, sisters Shirley Auderset, Betty Stutzer and brother Donald Kohler.

She is survived by her daughter LaRie Ford and numerous extended family members.

No formal services are planned. She will be buried alongside her husband and parents at Greenmount Cemetery.
