John McClure Vest
John McClure Vest, 78, died Friday, December 9, 2011, in Durango, Colo. A memorial service will be Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at 11:00 a.m.. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2 Hilltop Circle, Durango, and Tom Gurr will be officiating. Burial of John’s cremains will follow at the Kline Cemetery.
Mr. Vest was born December 16, 1932 in Kline, Colo., the son of William and Mary Vest, the youngest of six children. He attended school through the eighth grade and went to work to help support his family. He worked at a variety of jobs including delivering dairy and setting bowling pins at a bowling alley. He spent most of his working life retreading tires at Durango Tire and finished his career at Durango Bowl as a bowling machine mechanic. In his spare time he did upholstery work. He was married to Marie Vest for over 50 years.
John proudly served Durango by volunteering as a Reserve Officer for the Durango Police Department for seven years. He loved the stock car races and the time he spent at them with his brother, Jesse. He was never without a pocket watch.
John is survived by: Marie Vest (wife, Durango), Frankie White (Tom) (daughter, Durango), Diana Talbot (Randy) (daughter, Pagosa Springs), Larae Thomas (daughter, West Jordan, Utah), seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by: William Raymond Vest – father, Mary Ida Vest – mother, three brothers and two sisters.
