Obituary for
Stephen E. Vaudreuil
Stephen "Eskimo" Vaudreuil died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at home in Durango, Colo. He was 66.
Eskimo was born October 24, 1945, in Fairbanks, Alaska, son of William and Marguerite Nussle Vaudreuil. He played football in high school. When he left for Vietnam his mother asked him not to come back with more medals than his father. He was highly decorated and came back with even more medals. While serving in the U.S. Army, he was a "tunnel rat," which meant he would go through the underground tunnels in Vietnam. He was known to play the taps for the V.F.W. funeral services.
He owned a shoe repair shop in Rice Lake, Wis., before he moved to Durango in 2003. Eskimo worked as a custodian at Fort Lewis College before he retired.
Eskimo’s favorite pastime was singing karaoke; he would always start with "Personality." Lois would then sing "Funny Face" and together they would finish up with "Welcome to My World".
Lois remembers, “He was happy-go-lucky and enjoyed life. He joked a lot and he had a distinctive laugh. He loved golfing and hot dog skiing. He always communicated happy memories and was a compassionate friend to all. He liked to cheer people up and make them smile.”
He is survived by his significant other of 18 ½ years, Lois Allen, of Durango; brother, John Vaudreuil, of Madison, Wis.; sister, Mary Vaudreuil, of Grants Pass, Ore.; and two nieces.
Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2012, at the V.F.W. in Durango. A light lunch will be served.
