Obituary for
Claudia F. Turner
Claudia Francis Turner, a long-time resident of Durango, age 91, passed away on October 17, 2011, in Durango, Colo.
Claudia Francis Tucker was born to Charles Carson Tucker and Dura Anne (Campbell) Tucker on April 17, 1920, in Kansas City, Missouri, and moved to Atchison, Kansas, at two years of age. She was raised in Atchison, and graduated from Atchison High School in 1938. Claudia then took power sewing machine training and found work at the Burlington Overall factory in Kansas City, Missouri. Later she sewed for Whitestag Brand Garments and worked for J.C. Penney in California. She pursued her education by going to business college in San Bernardino.
She met Charles Troy Turner in 1940, and they were married in 1941. There were three boys born to this union - Charles, Richard and Leslie. Claudia lived in Globe, Ariz., for 20 years while her boys were growing up. She ran the local A & W drive-in and cooked in various restaurants. Claudia later moved to Durango with her son Leslie, who was tragically killed in a tractor accident while working at the Tacoma plant project in 1981. After moving to Durango, Claudia worked for Community Hospital in the records department and then at the Forest Service office for 12 years. She could be seen all over town driving an old, green Pinto station wagon until she moved into Tamarin Square in December 1983. She has the distinction of being their longest resident. Claudia was a long time member of the Durango Rebekah's Lodge, participating until it was disbanded.
Claudia spent over three years researching her family genealogy, tracing her family back to early England. With her genealogy in hand she was admitted to the DAR. Her hobbies of needlecraft, knitting, crocheting and needlepoint produced many pieces that became treasured gifts to her children, grandchildren and friends. Crocheting also was an enjoyable way for her to spend time with her many friends. She will be fondly remembered as Miss Sunshine and the Life of the Party.
Claudia was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2005, and son Leslie.
Claudia is survived by sons Charles and Richard, nine grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
