Tonia Joyce Thompson
Tonia Joyce Thompson, 74, died Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Colorado. A Funeral Service will be Friday, October 4, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Ms. Meg Carver will be officiating. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Miss Thompson was born July 12, 1939 in Durango, Colorado the daughter of William and Emma (Brown) Thompson. Tonia grew up in Durango, attended schools here and she graduated from Durango High School in 1957. She attended Fort Lewis College for one year and was working as a secretary for Triple S Realty. She moved to San Luis Obispo, CA and attended California Polytechnic State University and obtained her master's degree in Biology. She then moved back to the Durango area and then also lived in the Los Alamos, New Mex., for a short time. She met and married Clifford Plopper during that time, but the marriage ended in divorce. Tonia then worked in Durango as a Child protective services social worker. Tonia had a passion for animals, especially goats. She had a small farm that she called, "Piñon Acres," and it was there she had her goats and also raised Arabian horses. She had several canine companions and her poodle named "Prissy" was a favorite and preceded her in death. Tonia was also a gifted gardener, growing many varieties of vegetables. She is survived by Bill Thompson (brother) of Durango, Joshua Thompson (nephew) of Durango, CO, and Nancy Gunn (cousin) of Kremmling, CO and other extended family members.
