Obituary for Ronald G. Thompson

Ronald Gene Thompson, 76, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.

Mr. Thompson was born September 24, 1936, in Barneston, Nebraska, to Maurice and Marian (Versaw) Thompson. Ronald grew up in Nebraska and Colorado. He graduated from Saguache High School in 1955 where he was an amazing football player and attended Adams State College in Alamosa for a brief time.

Ronald started out working for North American Aviation for a number of years. From there he had a landscaping business in California before moving back to Colorado and owning and doing mechanical work at the old Texaco in Bayfield. He also did part time carpentry, truck driving, and some mechanical work. From there he went to work for Blackwood and Nickles (Devon Energy), where he retired for the first time. Ron could not stay retired for very long because he was always such a hard worker. He started working again at Lewis True Value in Bayfield. He retired again and then enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Ron was known for his sense of humor and personality in picking on people.

“He was inseparable from his wife, Sarah. They did everything together and always wore the same color clothing,” fondly recall his family. Ron enjoyed hunting, casinos, hanging out with family, working on his ranch, taking care of his rentals in Bayfield, and watching the Denver Broncos on TV. Ron was a member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Marian Thompson, his father- and mother-in-law, John and Macedonia Lucero, his grandson, Jaxon Formea and brother-in-laws, Bill McKinley and John Lucero.

He is survived by Sarah Thompson (wife) of Bayfield, Jim Thompson (son) of Gilbert, Ariz., Chuck (Kelly) Thompson (son and daughter-in-law) of Ignacio, Elisha Thompson (daughter) of Bayfield, Tabitha (Jim E.) Formea (daughter and son-in-law) of Ignacio, three grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, Patricia McKinley (sister) of Alamosa, Colo., Sandra Bodley (sister) of Calif., and Joyce Muhic (sister) of Rye, Colo.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Recitation of the Rosary will be said also on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio. A funeral service will be Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Father Douglas Hunt of St. Ignatius Catholic Church will be officiating. Burial will occur at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

A memorial account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank for his wife (Mary) Sarah to help with medical and funeral expenses.
