Mary R Szczerba (Mikulec)
Mary R. Szczerba, 93, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Colorado. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Columba Catholic Church. The Devine Mercy Chaplet will be recited prior to the funeral mass, also at St. Columba. Father Kevin Novack of St. Columba Catholic Church will be officiating. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Mrs. Szczerba was born July 7, 1920 in Buffalo, New York the daughter of Joseph and Anna Mikulec. Mary grew up in Buffalo, New York. She grew up Catholic and Mary attended Catholic school and remained a faithful member throughout her entire life. The family lived next door to the Church of the Assumption in Buffalo. While she was in her early 20's, Mary joined the war effort and was an aircraft riveter for Curtiss-Wright Corporation (which was the largest aircraft manufacturer in the United States). She met her husband, William A. Szczerba shortly afterward and they were married in 1946. Together, the couple owned and operated a dry cleaning business called Petty's Cleaner. Mary worked full time while raising her family. She always made sure her boys were appropriately dressed for Catholic school and she gave of her time cooking for many, many Catholic events (baptismals, confirmations, etc.) as she was an excellent cook. After the dry cleaning business, she was employed as a shipping clerk for a plastics manufacturing company. After the passing of her husband, Mary then moved to be with her son, Thomas, in Colorado. He was her caregiver for 14 years. After amputation of a leg, she was confined to a wheel chair in 2000. She was always seen in the company of her son Thomas and always had a warm smile for everyone.
Mary loved to polka in her younger years, enjoyed sewing and was a devoted adorer of the Divine Mercy Chaplet. She also attended St. Columba Catholic Church in Durango.
She is survived by Thomas Szczerba (son) of Bayfield, CO, William Szczerba (son) of Buffalo, NY, Guy Szczerba (son) of Hinsdale, NY, one granddaughter, two great-granddaughters, and Richard Mikulec (brother) of Milton Keyes, England.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William, one brother and two sisters.
