Obituary for Dorothy M. Stolworthy

Dorothy Marceil Stolworthy died Sept. 3, 2011 in Durango. She died in her sleep at 79 of natural causes. The family believes she died from a broken heart after losing her loving husband and best friend, Raymond Stolworthy, in February. The couple would have been married 62 years on June 7, 2011.

Mrs. Stolworthy was born Dorothy Marceil Haynes on Jan. 14, 1932, in Somerset to Joseph Cisco Haynes Sr. and Dorothy Edith Haynes. She lived in West Virginia until the age of 7 while her father worked as a coal miner. Then her parents moved to Farmington where she grew up with four brothers, Joseph Cisco Jr., Frank, Mendal, and Kenneth. As a child, she spent hours with her mother canning peaches, pears and vegetables.

Mrs. Stolworthy married Raymond Gillespie Stolworthy on June 7, 1949, in Farmington. The couple had five children and Mrs. Stolworthy dedicated her life to raising them.

The family moved to Henderson, Nev., and lived there until 1977 when Mr. and Mrs. Stolworthy decided to sell their house and moved to Durango. Mr. Stolworthy had promised to fulfill his wife’s dream of living in a log cabin in the beautiful mountains of Colorado. They bought 10 acres of undeveloped land near the Florida River on County Road 225 and the family worked for several years to develop the land.

Five children and 19 grandchildren were raised on the property, which they called Stolworthy Mountain.

“Mom had such a beautiful spirit. She was the most kind and gentle person,” her children wrote in the obituary. “Mom put everyone else’s needs first before giving thought to her own. She held our family together.”

Mrs. Stolworthy is survived by her children Raymond Craig Stolworthy, of Henderson, Nev., Sherril Lloyd Stolworthy of Durango, Gary Kent Stolworthy of Oakland, Ore., Starla Lynn Goodwin of Durango, and Laura Ellen Bishop of Farmington; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and brothers Kenneth Haynes from Kennewick, Wash., and Frank Haynes from Redmond, Wash.

A viewing for family members will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary, 1261 East Third Ave. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Florida Cemetery, located at County Road 228 and County Road 225.
