Obituary for Norene P. Smith

Norene Pearl Smith, 79, died Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at her home in Durango, Colo. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Durango. A reception will follow the memorial services. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Mrs. Smith was born November 16, 1932, in Helena, Ohio, the daughter of Isaiah and Gladys Flora. Norene was only 6 months old, her family located to the Falls Creek area. She grew up in the Durango area and attended school in Animas City and then attended high school at Durango High. She continued her education at the old Fort Lewis, Colorado University in Boulder and then later at Colorado General in Denver. As she was obtaining her education involving being a medical technician, she met her future husband, Richard, in Pagosa Springs in 1954. It was his sister who introduced them to each other. They were married in 1955 in Durango at the First United Methodist Church.

Norene was employed at Children's Hospital and then for a clinic in Pagosa Springs. In 1964, the family moved back to Durango and she worked for Mercy Hospital for 23 years. She also worked very briefly for hospice in La Plata County and for private insurance companies.

Norene enjoyed the arts and liked to paint. She liked to read and was a published author, writing a retrospective about her family. "She was an all-around, 'do gooder', " fondly recall her family. She liked to work on puzzles, play card games and was extensively involved with the First United Methodist Church for many, many years. Norene also liked to camp and hunt with her family in the splendor of Southwestern Colorado.

She is survived by Richard L. Smith (husband) of Durango, Colo., Ted Smith (son) of Redmond, Wash., Carl Smith (son) of Durango, Colo., Walter Smith (son) of Durango, Colo., Oscar Smith (son) of Bullhead City, Nev., six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her son Terry Smith in 1976, her brother Don Flora and her parents.
