Obituary for
James Harvey "Jim" Sitton
James “Jim” Harvey Sitton passed away on Friday, January 20, 2017, in Durango. He was 86 years old.
James was born April 20, 1930, to George Harvey Sitton and Euline Ida Ballenger Sitton in Alamosa, CO. He grew up in rural Colorado and Utah and attended Colorado State University. After graduation, he married the love of his life, Jean Carrie (McManus) in June of 1952. He served in the US Air Force as an ROTC Commission during the Korean War. He and Jean then returned to Bayfield, CO establishing and working the Sitton Hereford Ranch. Jim had started in the cattle business with his small 4-H registered Hereford herd, then continued in partnership with his father for many years. In addition to all the responsibilities of the ranch, he was extensively involved with his children in the Bayfield 4-H clubs, served on the Bayfield School Board, the La Plata County Fair Board and belonged to the La Plata County Cattleman’s Association. Every summer he found time for fishing and camping with his family in the Williams Lake area. Although he was an only child, he maintained a close relationship with his Sitton and Ballenger cousins. After retirement, Jim and Jean split their time between their home in Arboles, their cabin at the Lazy Crutch Park and cruising the world.
He is survived by children: Kathy (Lynn) Achziger of Eaton, CO, Patty (Pat) McCrary of Youngsville, NC, and Bill (Kathleen) Sitton of Ignacio, CO; Grandchildren: Sonya Fontenot, Matthew Sitton, Michael and Richard McCrary, Greg Achziger, Emily Keegan, and Sarah and Noelle Sitton; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean and their son, Thomas Sitton.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Interment of Jean and Jim's cremains will be later this summer at Pine River Cemetery.
