Martha Simpson died peacefully in her home in Durango, CO on February 8, 2019 of natural causes. Born March 29, 1924 in Trinidad, CO to Charles and Vera Carman. Martha graduated Valedictorian of Durango High School in 1942, then attended Western State College before, as she stated "succumbing to one of many job offers" associated with nationally recognized record scores in short hand and dictation.
Martha married George Simpson in 1945 and lived in Durango the rest of their lives. Martha worked the last 17 years of her career as a Court Reporter in the criminal and juvenile courts. Martha was very active in the community participating in PEO, First Presbyterian Church, and various clubs throughout Durango.
She is preceded in death by her siblings Alene Brennan and Frank Carman, both long time Durango residents, brother Jim Carman at the age of 9, her husband George Simpson, daughter Judy Pierson of Albuquerque NM and Mark Simpson of Boulder, CO. She is survived by nephews Jim Brennan, Glendale, AZ, Bruce Carman, Grand Junction, CO and Frank Carman, Rim Rock, AZ, her daughter-in-law Valorie Simpson, Scottsdale, AZ, four grandchildren and six great nieces and nephews.
Martha was loved by many, and influential in the lives of her family, extended family, friends and acquaintances. She will missed immensely, but her love of life and memories will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Special thanks to Dr Joe Murphy, Berlinda and Raymond Maestas and Martha's caregivers during her last days.
A funeral will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church 1159 E 3rd Ave, Durango, with burial to follow at Greenmount Cemetery.
