Obituary for Shirley I. Short

Bondad resident Shirley Ione Short, 83, died Saturday, January 5, 2013, in her home.

She was born April 6, 1929, in Moline, Kan., to Jacob Jay and Opal Lillie Dowler. She graduated from Durango High School.

On September 21, 1947, she married Neil K. Short at her parents' home in Durango. She was a housewife, and worked at Basin Livestock Commission for many years, and in her later years she worked and retired from J. C. Penney's. She was a member of La Plata County Cowbells and Cattleman's Association. She most enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, embroidering, crocheting, farming and ranching, and dancing at the Eureka Grange Hall. Her daughters said, "She was a loving granny and mother who was loved by everyone."

She was preceded in death by her husband Neil K. Short, son-in-law Dave Huffman, grandson A.J. Franzen, brother Jack Dowler, sister Nancy Morris, and brother Ronald Dowler, who died earlier the same day on January 5, 2013, in Durango.

She is survived by four daughters: Susie (Huffman) Sumner of Durango, Lois Franzen of Sidney, Mont., Debbie Lee of San Mateo, N.M., and Sandie Marlatt of Durango; sister Reola Melanson of Yorktown, Texas; brother Dean Dowler of Durango; four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and eight step-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Larry Haslam will officiate. Burial will occur at Elco Cemetery in Durango.
