Beverly Shine

August 19, 1951 — May 14, 2021

Beverly Ann Shine (Cook) passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Friday, May 14 at the Mercy Hospice House in Durango, Colorado.

Bev was born to Leslie and Maxine Cook on August 19, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri. Bev was baptized September 30, 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

The family moved to Raytown, Missouri in 1964. Bev and her sister, Sandy, graduated from Raytown South High School and both went on to Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. Bev married William E. Shine III in 1971 and welcomed three children into the world (Amanda, Kevin, and Scott) over the course of the next eleven years.

Bev worked in a variety of fields, beginning as a secretary to agents in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. She was a homemaker for many years after the kids were born and then had a successful career as a health insurance broker.

In 1999, Bev was diagnosed with a pineal cytoma brain tumor and underwent two surgeries to remove the tumor. While this was a very disruptive event in her life, she was quick to tell people that she “thanked God for her brain tumor” because it brought her closer to Jesus and led to many demonstrations of God’s grace in her life.

Bev loved her family very much and was always looking for ways to bless and care for them. She was always quick to make others laugh with her wit and friendly sarcasm.

Her father and mother preceded her in entering heavenly joys. She is survived by her sister, Sandra (Greg) Galvin; her three children and their spouses, Amanda Shine & Seth Braach, Kevin & Cherith Shine, and Scott & Jenny Shine; three nieces, Julie (Chris) Brown, Melanie (Corey) Van Pelt, and Tracy (Will) Hurst; and her nine grandchildren: Elliot, Anina and Gillian Sanford, Noah, Reuben, Daniel and Caleb Shine, and Lily and Evan Shine.

Bev’s favorite hymn was ‘My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less’ which contains the following line, “On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.” This clearly and powerfully captures Bev’s foundation of peace and hope.

A worship service will be held to praise God for Bev’s life at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Durango, Colorado on Wednesday, May 19 at 11:00 AM. Memorial donations in Bev’s honor can be made to LCMS Global Mission (https://www.lcms.org/givenow/globalmission).
