Obituary for
Judith L. Sheffield
Bayfield resident, Judith Sheffield, died of Alzheimer's disease and other complications on October 15, 2011, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango.
Ms. Sheffield was born in Long Beach, Calif., on March 1, 1941, to Walter A. and Barbara D. Tebbetts, and was their first of two daughters. The family lived in the Los Angeles area before settling in Westminster, Calif., in 1954. Ms. Sheffield graduated in 1958 from high school in Westminster. She soon joined the United States Air Force, where she met the love of her life, Gerald "Shef" Sheffield. They were married September 15, 1961, and celebrated their 49th anniversary shortly before his death in October 2010. Ms. Sheffield also enjoyed her service and friends in the National Guard medical unit in Durango.
With a life-long love of learning, Ms. Sheffield attended college in Texas and in Durango. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Fort Lewis College and achieved placement in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. She loved to teach, and it showed in her dedication as a teacher in the Ignacio and Bayfield area. She was an avid reader and wrote some of her own short stories.
Ms. Sheffield loved all animals and horses most of all. She worked in various animal rescue centers and veterinarian offices. She rode in competitive endurance rides, participated in hunter/jumper, and showed both English and western. Ms. Sheffield was participating in therapeutic riding in the last year of her life. She had close bonds with the friends she rode with.
Ms. Sheffield also enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning foods, and drinking hot tea with a good book. She found great joy camping and hiking in the outdoors with her family. She attended St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Bayfield in earlier years and later joined Calvary Presbyterian Church in Bayfield for the remainder of her life.
Ms. Sheffield is survived by her daughter, Andrea Sheffield, of Durango; son, Brian Sheffield, of Bayfield; sister, Kathleen Lewis, of Salem, Oregon; one grandson and several cousins and many friends.
