Obituary for Randolph "R.T." Scott

Randolph (R.T.) Tom Scott passed away at his home in Durango on Thursday, October 18, 2012.

R.T. was born June 11, 1926, in Texhoma, Okla. He grew up in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl and had many stories about the hardships his family endured during this time. He held odd jobs before moving to Durango in the early 1950's. He worked for Joe Hotter as an outfitter for several years. In January 1956, he married Shirley Ann Katschthaler at St. Columba Catholic Church. R.T. and Shirley have been married 56 years.

In June of 1956, he began a heavy equipment construction company, Scott & Sons. The company grew throughout the 25 years he owned and operated it, becoming the largest privately owned construction company in Southwest Colorado. One of his most notable projects was building the lake and fountain for Pagosa Lodge. After leaving the construction business, he obtained his real estate license, selling property in the Four Corners area. In 1978 he was elected as La Plata County Commissioner, for which he was re-elected in 1982. During his eight years as commissioner, he worked hard to listen to and serve the citizens. R.T. enjoyed outdoor activities such as horseback riding and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of the family home, children: Randy and wife Diane Scott, Rodney Scott, Dr. Michael Scott and Lisa Scott of Durango, Steve and wife Marta Scott of Riverton, Wyo., and Sheri Reading of Albuquerque, N.M., grandchildren: Matthew, Crystal, David, Samantha, Shelby, Kelcie, Trent and Joseph, great-grandchild Kailey Anne. He is also survived by his brothers: Winfeld and Claude Scott, and sister, Elmadene Kropp.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Sunday, October 21, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 22, 2012, at St. Columba Catholic Church. Interment will take place at Greenmount Cemetery immediately after the service.

Charitable contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Denver.
