Hilton Schroder

December 8, 1934 — February 2, 2018

Hilton C. Schroder, a long-time Durango resident, died peacefully at home from leukemia with the loving care of Hospice on February 2, 2018 in Durango, CO.

He was born December 8, 1934 in Luck, Wisconsin to Clara and Fred Schroder, graduating from Luck High School in 1953, serving in the US Army from 1954 – 1956 while stationed in Germany, receiving an honorable discharge. He attended the University of Wisconsin at River Falls later moving to the warmer climes of Southern California where he attended college and worked construction as well as served as a very accomplished golf pro. He met and married Peggy Hammond in 1967 and they lived in Surfside, CA where Hilton worked for Califoam as a Purchasing Agent.

They enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, backpacking, camping and skiing. It was on a ski package that they discovered the beauty of the San Juans and decided in 1980 to make it home. In Durango, Hilton designed and built custom homes in Timberline View Estates and elsewhere. He excelled at golf as a scratch player for many years, achieving a Double Eagle at Hillcrest Golf Club and continued playing the game into his 80’s. He succeeded in riding the Durango to Silverton bicycle race three times and loved competing in Tucson’s Senior Olympics winning First Place medals in racing events.

Hilton struggled with memory loss in his later years especially frustrated with golf’s muscle memory. He fought it by memorizing all 50 state capitals, reviewing friends’ and family members’ names often, reading, exercising and a daily game of Scrabble.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy, of 50 years, his brother John Schroder and sister, Clarice Threlkeld, his Little Sister (BB/BS) Elisa Vautier and numerous nieces and nephews. Hilton will be missed for his steadfast yet gentle personality, fun sense of humor and genuine interest and the care he extended for all who knew him. There will be no services by request. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Durango or a memorial donation to Alzheimer’s Foundation.
