Mike Schlarb, born April 18, 1961 in Calgary Canada. Moved to the U.S. in 1969 to the East Coast and in 1972 moved to La Canada, CA. Mike moved to Durango after graduating from La Canada High school in 1979 where he quickly found a job as a mechanic and soon after that was the youngest fireman to be hired by the Durango Fire Department.
Mike met and married the love of his life, Monie on July 7th 1984. The couple were married in the Animas Valley surrounded by friends and family beside Coon Creek in a simple and beautiful wedding.
From a very young age, Mike was insatiably curious about the world, pursued things that interested him with a single minded focus, insane natural ability and a commitment to excellence. Just a few things he excelled at: Cello; car motors; French horn; Motorcycles; movie making; fire engines; rock-climbing; sky diving; banjo; electric guitar; motor boats; pretty much any kind of motor; anything with wings; water sports; snow sports. But most of all his family.
Mike was well known, respected and admired as one of Durango's own "Shclarby" as he was known by his friends. After 18 years with the Durango Fire Department Mike pursued a second career realizing his life dream of becoming a pilot. Everyone who knew Mike admired his personality traits and respected his impeccable integrity. He had a calming and patient demeanor that served his life well in both of these demanding career choices that require a cool head under pressure.
Mike is survived by his wife Monie Schlarb and two children, Shane and Amber Brown. Parents Bill and Sharon Schlarb, two sisters Cathy Stewart and Beverly Coke.
