Leta Irene (Mitchell) Sauer a lifetime resident of Durango passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 (a day after her 90th birthday). She was born on March 12, 1928 to Gerald and Dora Mitchell.
Leta was raised on a farm in Allison where she also attended school until her sophomore year. In her junior year she moved to Durango, where she completed high school.
Leta Mitchell married John Sauer on October 18, 1946. John and Leta were married 61 years before his death. They had five children.
Leta loved to ride horses, fly airplanes and had her pilot’s license. Leta loved to ride in the gliders, played softball and was County Clerk for 12 years in La Plata County. She is also well known for her bread that she gave out to her co-workers, neighbors and church family.
Leta was an active member of her church. She taught Sunday school to children and adults, she led the church choir and when asked to fill in for the Pastor she was always there and willing to teach.
Leta is preceded in death by her parents Gerald and Dora Mitchell; brother Derald Mitchell; husband John Sauer; daughter Sharma Sauer; and son Donald Sauer.
Leta is survived by her three daughters; Sandra McCord of Denver, Lindy Harris and her husband Jackie Harris of Brownfield, Texas, Dora McLaughlin of Raleigh, North Carolina; a step sister Darlene Westbrock of Paso Robles, California; two grandchildren, two step grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leta will be cremated and her ashes will be laid to rest in Allison. A graveside memorial will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
