Obituary for
Robert Edward Sammons
Mr. Robert Edward Sammons died Saturday, May 26, 2011 at his home in Durango, Colorado.
Mr. Sammons was born to Phillip and Mary Alice Sammons on April 7, 1937 in El Paso, Texas. He spent his childhood in El Paso, graduating from Cathedral High School in 1955. After attending one year of college at University of Texas - El Paso, Mr. Sammons joined the Navy. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA. While in the navy he served on the USS Richard E Krauss and traveled through the Bermuda triangle five times. Upon leaving the service he returned to El Paso and worked for his father and brother in the construction industry.
In 1961, Mr. Sammons went to work for El Paso Natural Gas in Farmington, NM where he enjoyed a 35 year career doing various jobs, including field clerk, maintenance, and linesman.
In 1963, he met his future wife, Barbara Seale, in Durango. They met at a local establishment when she was lucky enough to drive his red t-top convertible corvette around town. They married later that same year and had one daughter, Mary Leigh, in Farmington after which the family moved to El Paso and had two more daughters, Dianna Dawn and Joyce Suzanne and a son, Barry Eugene. In 1975, the Sammons returned to Durango.
Mr. Sammons was a member of the Elks Club and St. Columba, served on the Board of Directors at St. Columba and was involved in 4H, and Babe Ruth Baseball.
He loved golf, the Rockies, the Broncos, and all Durango High School Sports. His family said "He loved watching and being a part of his kids and grandchildren’s lives."
He is survived by his wife; Barbara Sammons of Durango; daughters Mary Leigh Miles of Durango, Dianna Dawn Sammons of Albuquerque, Joyce Suzanne Walters of Highlands Ranch, CO; son Barry Eugene Sammons of San Diego, CA; sister Helen Robbins of Austin, TX; brother Jack Sammons of Houston, TX; 6 Grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 2, 2012, at St. Columba Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to DHS Athletics, 2390 North Main Ave, Durango, Co 81301.
