Ubaldo "Chappo" Salazar
Ubaldo “Chappo” Salazar, 92, died Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango, Colo. A visitation will occur from 3 p.m to 8 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Pastor Joseph E. Alcon will be officiating.
Mr. Salazar was born November 8, 1919, in Coyote, N.M., the son of Aneceto and Olibama Salazar. Mr. Salazar grew up in Durango. At a young age, he had to help his family and he began working in the Civilian Conservation Corps camps in the area and helped make the trails at Mesa Verde State Park. When he was 22 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During the years between 1941 and 1944, he was involved in the Island Campaign, the Guadalcanal Campaign, the Asiatic Theater and he was awarded the Bronze Star. After the military, Mr. Salazar returned to the Durango area. He worked various jobs. He retired from Durango High School as a custodian.
While in his retirement, Mr. Salazar enjoyed helping others. He drove many elderly friends and people to their various appointments. Mr. Salazar enjoyed football, reading, fishing and walking. "He loved all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was his everything," fondly recall his daughters. He was a proud Durango community member for 82+ years.
He is survived by Pauline (Charlie) Flores (daughter and son-in-law) of Roseberg, Texas; Millie (Ray) Monsivaiz (daughter and son-in-law) of Clarksville, Tenn.; Willie Salazar (son) of Las Vegas, Nev.; Richard Salazar (son) of Las Vegas, Nev.; Elaine Lindsey (daughter) of Farmington, N.M.; Mark Salazar (son) of Las Vegas, Nev.; Regina (Joseph) Alcon (daughter and son-in-law) of Farmington, N.M.; 17 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, Robert Salazar (brother), Oris Salazar (brother), Jennie Pilon (sister), and numerous other family members.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Rudy Salazar.
