Obituary for Elma Lena Roget

Elma Lena Roget left us to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, May 17, 2014. We love and miss you!
Elma was born on April 7, 1928 in Matawan, NJ to John and Miriam Neuman and was always excited to have been born on the same day as Mickey Mouse.
As a child she was always her Daddy’s “boy” and loved getting away with things her mother did not always approve of or may have been less than “lady-like”. Going for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean was one of Elma’s favorite things to do despite her mother’s misgivings. Her father introduced her to adventure by taking her to the 1937 World’s Fair in New York City where she rode the very first escalator. While in her early teens she joined the Sea Scouts and helped keep watch for enemy planes in World War II. From there her taste for adventure continued to grow throughout her life.
Elma attended New Jersey State Teachers College majoring in Design but later transferred to Taylor University in Upland, IN where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Art. Elma became engaged to be married during this time but insisted on honoring parents by graduating college with her maiden name. After graduation she married Dr. John Roget in 1951 and had four children, Beverly, Alan, Mark and Brian Roget.
Throughout her life Elma was a homemaker but also chose to do much more. Her love for quilting and crafting led her to become the owner and operator of Sunshine Corners craft shop in Belle Center, OH. She was also a member of King’s Daughters. After moving to New Mexico she became a teacher’s aide at Animas Elementary and also worked for Ku Tips Nursery. Elma had an affinity for the outdoors. She loved plants, birds, photography and had many adventures all over the world. She enjoyed her many friends from the Bonnie Dallas Senior Center where she danced whenever possible and was often a part of the Senior Olympics.
Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were an important part of Elma’s life. Grandchildren include Erin, Nathan (D), Robin & Michael, Ryan (D), Kyle, Garrett, Renee (D), Hannah, Rachael, Nathalie, Bryce, Torrie. Her great-grandchildren include Ethan, Katelyn, Nathan, Samuel, Cyrus, Jacob, and Koen. As Elma’s battle with dementia lengthened and her mind grew younger she developed a special bond with Ethan and Katelyn not only as a grandmother but also as a playmate.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to several groups of people. To the PMS Hospice staff, Home Helper’s staff, Hood Mortuary Staff and Dr. Abernathy and Miranda…we have appreciated your professionalism and expertise but it was your kindness that truly touched us. You all made a difficult time much easier. Thank you all for everything!
Per Elma’s request there will be no formal service. She is currently in the care of Hood Mortuary in Durango, CO. She asked that she be cremated and her ashes be spread in one of her favorite places.
In lieu of flowers or cards Elma would love it if everyone would go outside and plant some flowers or feed some birds instead.
