Marian Beryl Rizzo, 85, died Friday, October 3, 2014 at home in Durango, Colorado of natural causes. Mrs. Rizzo lived in Durango, Colorado for 10 years. A celebration of life will be held at First United Methodists Church of Durango on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 10:00am.
Mrs. Rizzo was born March 11, 1929 in Albion, Nebraska the daughter of Elvin and Marion McCone. She married Frank Rizzo on December 23, 1957 in Berkeley, California. The couple lived in California until 2003. They were married for 45 years. After Mr. Rizzo’s death, Mrs. Rizzo moved to Durango to live closer to her son and his family in Pagosa Springs, Colo.
Mrs. Rizzo taught five years in rural schools in Boone County, Nebraska. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska. Mrs. Rizzo taught in an American military school in Munich, Germany and then moved to California where she met her future husband. She enjoyed being a mother to their three sons, later resumed teaching, and when both retired, they moved to the Sierra mountain community of Grass Valley, California. Working with children in Sunday school and singing in the choir were important parts of her retirement life. In Durango, she also involved herself in many volunteer activities.
Survivors include sons, Timothy Rizzo of Visalia, CA, Philip Rizzo and his wife Marie of Pagosa Springs, and Paul Rizzo and his wife Cecilia of Reno, NV; Six grandchildren: Tenney and Kyle of Visalia, CA, Eric Hegreness of Boulder, CO, and Chantalle, Seth and Jonathon of Pagosa Springs, CO.; her brother Kenneth McCone of Upland, CA; her sister Doris Hunter of Saline, Mich., and nieces and nephews.
