Edgar Riecke, Retired Chemist and Competitive Bike Racer, Dead at 69.
Edgar Erick Riecke died in a motorcycle incident in Garfield County, Utah on Saturday, October 11, 2014.
He is preceded by his mother Helen Riecke and his father Ray Riecke. He is survived by his sisters Linda Conlon and Sandra Webster; his children Jeffrey Riecke, Katherine Riecke, and Sarah Riecke Early; and his companion Catherine Culver.
Edgar was born and raised on his family's farm in Ruthven, Iowa. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota and his doctorate degree in organic chemistry from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Upon receiving his doctorate he accepted a position at Kodak in Rochester, New York, which began a 30 year career as a research scientist with the film company. A competitive road cyclist and avid skier all his adult life, when he retired from Kodak Edgar moved to the mountain town of Durango, Colorado in the fall of 2006. Up until the time of his death, Edgar lived a full life, competing against and topping cyclists much his junior, embarking on motorcycle and scuba diving trips, and spending time with friends and loved ones.
A gathering of friends will commence at the Lion’s Den (across from the Hillcrest Golf Course Clubhouse) at 10am – noon on Sunday October 19, 2014. All are welcome to share memories and honor his life. In lieu of flowers, feel free to contribute to Annie’s Orphans Dog Shelter. The family will gather in the spring (exact time to be decided) for a commemorative service and committal of his ashes.
