Obituary for Byron James "BJ" Red Sr.

Byron James Red, Sr., 54, passed on to the Spirit world surrounded by his loved ones in the early morning of August 24, 2011. He was born January 15, 1957, in Durango, Colo.

He attended the Ignacio School district and graduated in 1975. He attended SIPI to study Drafting. He began working with the Southern Ute Reservation crew, and was Director of Natural Resources Division, a member of the Southern Ute Housing Board, Southern Ute Tribal Council Member, an Executive Officer for the Southern Ute Indian tribe, a Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum Board member and a carpenter by trade. He was also an artist.

He was a Sundancer and a member of the Four Corners Gourd Society. He loved to travel and enjoyed being in the outdoors and the amusement parks as well as: golfing, fishing, archery, bead working, crafts, and painting. He was devoted to his spiritual upbringing, loved his family, grandkids and loved working for his tribe.

He is survived by his wife Lucille 'Alice' J. Red of 38 years of Ignacio, daughter, JoGenia M. Red (Craig) of Denver; sons James B. Red (Charlotte) of Durango and Byron J. Red Jr. of Ignacio; and granddaughters Kyla K. Red and Sage E. Red.

He is also survived by mother Shirley A. Frost and step-father Stanley R. Frost, brother Vernon Frost ( Joyce), sisters Vivian Frost and Cheryl Frost; nieces Kelsey Frost and Marysa Frost, nephews Devin Frost and Cameron Frost, all of Ignacio, and aunt Eloisa Apachito and the Bernal families of Taos Pueblo. He also has numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his grandmother Nana Red, grandfather Bird Red, brother Michael A. Frost, all of Ignacio, and father Anthony Bernal of Taos Pueblo.

A rosary will be recited at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, followed by a visitation from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A wake will be held at the family home following the visitation on Sunday. A sunrise service will take place at the family home Monday, Aug. 29, 2011. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at the Gathering Room at Southern Ute Memorial Chapel, 258 Ute Road, Ignacio, Colo. Burial will occur at Ouray Memorial Cemetery. A reception will take place at the Gathering Room in the Southern Ute Memorial Chapel after the burial.
