Obituary for
Wynafred S. Plunk
Wynafred S. “Wynkie” Plunk died Thursday, June 14, 2012, in Durango, Colo. She was 56.
Mrs. Plunk was born September 26, 1955, in Athens, Ala., daughter of Wallace and Louise Steele. She grew up in Athens, Ala., and graduated from Mississippi University for Women in 1978. She was an accomplished gymnast in high school and college. She was married in 1978 in Athens, and she and her husband moved to Durango, where she worked at Community Hospital and the Durango Herald.
Mrs. Plunk was a volunteer at the Durango Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Mercy Auxiliary at Mercy Medical Center. She served on the Volunteers of America Southwest Safe House Board of Directors for 10 years, and she was honored by KUSA (9 News) in Denver as one of the Nine Who Care in 1993. On National Philanthropy Day in 1993 she was named the “Outstanding Volunteer Leader” for the State of Colorado. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Durango, as well as a founding member of de Colores Civitan Club in Durango.
Her husband, Joe Wade Plunk, said, “She turned the curse of multiple sclerosis into a blessing for others through quiet volunteerism.”
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Joe Wade Plunk, of Durango, her mother, Louise Strange Steele, and her sister, Amy Steele, both of Athens, Alabama, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her father, Wallace, her brother Bill, and her nephew, Daniel Nunley.
Services will be held on Sunday, June 17, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Athens, Alabama. No local services are planned at this time.
