Obituary for Betty M. Pieper

Betty M. (Cohn) Pieper died Tuesday, December 6, 2011, in Mancos, Colo., at the age of 94 after a valiant struggle with M.S. for more than 50 years.

She was born August 22, 1917, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Arthur and Hattye Cohn. After high school and secretarial school, she became a legal secretary. In 1940, she married Richard F. Pieper. Both families were long-time residents of Milwaukee, and she lived there until the 1980's. She and her husband were active in Republican politics, and Betty was Party Secretary for the 9th District. They were often delegates to the Wisconsin State GOP conventions. She was an active election worker in Wisconsin, Florida, and Colorado.

Betty was a Girl Scout leader, and helped her husband with Boy Scouts. She was also active as a PTA leader.

She especially enjoyed the north woods of Wisconsin, where she and her family had a cottage from her childhood until 1955. Her love of nature was imparted to her son and daughter. Since 1991, she particularly enjoyed her life in southwest Colorado with camping trips and four-wheeling with the family.

Her other joys were traveling, swimming, bridge, reading, and handing out treats to visiting dogs in remembrance of her beloved boxers. In all of this, her M.S. barely slowed her down.

She was preceded in death by Richard, her husband of 31 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Bontrager of Hesperus, Colo., and Tucson, Ariz.; son, David Pieper of Matairie, La.; five grandsons, three great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters, one great-great-grandson and one great-great-granddaughter.

Her ashes will be interred beside her husband in Milwaukee. Memorial contributions may be made to the M.S. Foundation, Durango Chapter.

A time of remembrance will be held for family and friends at 7 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2011, at Hesperus Baptist Church, 22972 Highway 140. A private celebration of her life will be held in Tucson in late December.

Remembrances may be mailed to Ellen Bontrager at 9172 E. Kayenta Drive, Tucson AZ 85749.
