Sybilee Phillips was born to Fred and Clara Hippe on December 2, 1914, in Wheatland, Wyo., one of eight kids. Sybilee had no electricity or running water for all of her growing up years and many years after she married. She married Louis Phillips in Union, Ore., in 1939 and they had four children. In the early years of their marriage, she washed clothes on a washboard and ironed their clothes by heating an iron on the wood burning stove. They had a crank telephone in the late 1940s and early 1950s and got their first TV in 1963. They made Bayfield their home in 1965. Sybilee loved being a housewife and mother. Later in life, she accepted a position as a cook at Bayfield Schools where she worked for more than 10 years.
She was a long standing member of the Pine River Valley Baptist Church and very active in the Bayfield Senior Center, including participating in the exercise class right up to the end of her life. She was a mean card player, especially pinochle. You definitely wanted to be her partner, not her opponent. Her contagious smile and positive attitude made many people happy. “She was loved by all and will be missed greatly,” fondly recall her family.
She is survived by Janice (and Frank) Quimby (daughter and son-in-law)of Smithville, W.V., Dallas Phillips (son) of Bayfield, Chloe (and Ken) Wiebe (daughter and son-in-law) of Bayfield, Scott (and Mary) Wiebe (grandson and granddaughter-in-law) of Durango, Brian Wiebe (grandson) of Bayfield, Jordan, Makenzie, John Michael and Damian (all great-grandchildren), and Martha Heneghen (sister) of Yakima, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis Phillips, her daughter Arleta Phillips, her grandson Brent Stellman, and four brothers and two sisters.
