Richard Leroy Peavey passed away peacefully in his home near Durango, April 28, 2016. He was born in Davenport, Iowa on July 19, 1946, to Stephen and Janet Peavey of Dewitt, IA.
Rich grew up in Davenport, IA and attended Assumption High School where he lettered in football and wrestling. His love and pursuit of sports earned him a scholarship to Fort Lewis College. In 1967, he volunteered to serve his country with the United States Marine Corp, 1st Marine Division, during the Vietnam War.
He married Pamela Ann Messinger on July 15, 1970 in Telluride, CO. They lived in Boulder, CO while he attended the university. After their first son was born, they moved to Iowa to work in the family business. They returned to Colorado in 1980 and built their quiet home in the mountains outside Durango. They raised 2 boys there, Aaron and Ethan. Rich worked in water management for the Animas Valley and the City of Durango, and took great pride in helping to provide this resource until his retirement in 2009.
Rich enjoyed motorcycles, the mountains, his basset hounds, tinkering in his shed, and most of all, spending time with his family. On July 15, 2015, he celebrated his 45th wedding anniversary to the love of his life, Pam.
He is survived by his wife Pam, brother John Peavey (Sharon), his sons Aaron (Amy) and Ethan (Brita), and their children Kari, Jackson, Jacob, Nina, Samuel and Elsa. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father and a friend. His simply ways, his gentle spirit, his wisdom and charity, will be missed. We are grateful we had the opportunity to know and love him, and to be loved by him.
Services will be held at Hood Mortuary Friday May 6, 2016 at 10am, with interment following at Hermosa Cemetery.
