George Stockton Oldfield, Jr.
George Stockton Oldfield, Jr., 97, long-time resident of Dryside (southwest of Hesperus), Colorado and Farmington, New Mexico died on Thursday, March 6, 2014 in Farmington, New Mexico. George Oldfield was born in Hesperus, CO on a homestead secured by his pioneering parents. He graduated from High School in Marvel Colorado. He served in World War II on a Navy ship. He was awarded a purple heart for burns and injuries from a suicide bomber attack that attempted to sink the ship. In the Navy, he was trained to be an electrician. After returning from the Navy, he worked on the Hoover Dam, LaPlata Electric power plant in Durango, and the City of Farmington utility department. Mr. Oldfield’s greatest passion in life was plow, plant and harvest wheat or beans on his farm land. Mr. Oldfield is survived by his wife of sixty one years, Pauline Oldfield, his children, Steve Oldfield, Virginia Hird and her husband Paul, Vivian Morgan, Victoria Torres and her husband Gary Torres, eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. His grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 10:00 am at Hood Mortuary, 1261 East Third Avenue, Durango, Colorado with Keith Dickinson officiating. Interment will follow in Greenmount Cemetery. The family would like to thank all the family and friends for their love and kindness with George during his long term illness.
