Norma Jean Engman

September 15, 1935 — February 9, 2025

Durango, Colorado

Norma Jean (Hurta) Engman passed away unexpectedly at her home on February 9, 2025.

Norma was born September 15, 1935, in Palacios, TX, to Tony and Betty Hurta. She grew up and worked in her parent's grocery store in Jal, NM. She graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 1957, where she was named Outstanding Senior Woman. After graduating, Norma worked in Farwell, TX for several years, teaching high school typing and bookkeeping.

She married Bill Engman in 1959. After living in Clovis, NM, Laramie, WY, and Albuquerque, NM, Norma and her family moved to Durango in 1970. She taught typing at Durango High School, then started her real estate career in 1977 with Realty World, before moving to Durango's Coldwell Banker office. She worked hard to be a successful Realtor, and earned the Durango Area Association of REALTOR's Realtor of the Year honor in 1987. Norma finally retired in 2020, after 31 years at Coldwell Banker.

Beyond her work, Norma was a well-known and active community member. She had a gift for and enjoyed connecting with people. She was an avid sports fan, attending her children's many sporting activities in high school and college. After they moved on, she remained a strong supporter of the Fort Lewis Skyhawks Booster Club, cheering on the home team at local games, and was a die-hard Denver Nuggets fan. She also loved working on her beautiful lawn and gardens at her home in Florida River Estates, her back yard is a testament to her care.

Norma was a long-time, faithful member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and served on the church's vestry for many years.

She is survived by three children, Lisa, Jeff (Loretta), and Mark (Dana), and seven grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Norma maintained her kindness, grace, faith, love of family and friends, and amazing work ethic.

Norma's family plans a memorial event later this spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a contribution in Norma's honor to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 910 East 3rd Avenue, Durango, CO 81301.
