Obituary for Carla A. Mulkey

Longtime Durango resident Carla Ann Mulkey passed on February 28, 2012. She died of natural causes at her home.

Mrs. Mulkey was born to Carl E. and Martha A. Larimore on March 15, 1950, in Cortez, Colorado.

She was raised in the Four Corners area, graduated Montezuma Cortez High School in 1968, then Fort Lewis College in 1972.

In 1976, she married James M. Mulkey DDS in Pueblo, Colorado. They moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where James received his M.S. in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Carla completed her Master's in Elementary Counseling at Adams State College.

Returning to Durango, Colorado, in 1980, she began her career as counselor of Needham Elementary School, and in 2009 she was elected Colorado's elementary school counselor of the year.

Mrs. Mulkey was preceded in death by her father, Carl E. Larimore; stepsister, Elizabeth Morris; stepfather, Guy B. Dyer; and stepbrother, Lloyd Dyer.

She is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Amanda and husband Kurtis Martinez, and Tonya A. Mulkey; grandsons, Kaedon and Kamdon Martinez; mother, Martha A. Dyer; sisters, Lana and husband Don Cross and Mary Sue and husband Don Akin; stepbrother Bruce Dyer and Donna Stroup; and numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church of Durango.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Durango, or Sexual Assault Services Organization of Durango.
