Obituary for Shirley Davis Morris

Shirley Davis Morris passed away Thursday, November 12, 2015, in Durango, Colorado, surrounded by family. She was 88 years old.
Shirley was born June 25,1927, to Calvin V. Davis and Ruth Clewell in Bronxville, NY. She graduated from Central High School, Fountain City, TN, in 1945, and Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, in 1949. She moved to Chicago where she married Howard Morris, an officer in the US Navy, in 1952. His career took them to Long Beach, CA; San Diego, CA; Troy, NY; Newport Beach, RI; Blackwood, NJ; and Honolulu, HI. While in Honolulu, Shirley earned a Master's Degree from the University of Hawaii.
Howard retired in 1971 and they moved to Evergreen, CO. In 1977 they moved to Durango. They built a home in Falls Creek Ranch where they lived for 21 years. In 2001, they moved into town and lived surrounded by several of their children on what has become affectionately known as “Morris Avenue.”
Along with Howard and her children, Shirley enjoyed an active mountain lifestyle. Her interests included hiking, skiing, rafting, camping, bicycling, world travel, playing bridge, reading, and keeping up on current events. She was an active community member, volunteered for the Durango Friends of the Arts, and supported the San Juan Symphony. Shirley and Howard participated in the AFS Intercultural Program and hosted a Japanese exchange student for one year. Shirley worked for the Census Bureau and was a teacher's aide for special education classes at Mason Elementary School.
She is survived by her children: Susan (Donn) Hicks, Linda Morris, David (Elvi Schreiner) Morris, Alan (Karen) Morris, Glenn Morris all of Durango; her grandchildren: Nathan Morris, Jennifer Morris, Heather Adair, Amanda Morris, Amber Klein, Ashlee Strube, Audrey Morris, and Rowan Morris. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, and daughter, Leslie Morris Swaford.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 5, 2015, at 11 a.m., at the Fort Lewis College Chapel. Memorial contributions may be sent to the San Juan Symphony, PO BOX 1073, Durango 81302 or www.sanjuansymphony.org
