Obituary for
John P. "Johnny" Morris
John Paul Morris (Johnny) died Monday, July 16, 2012, at home in Durango, Colo. He was 96.
Johnny and his twin brother, Vincent, were born January 21, 1916, in the family cabin in Durango to Mike and Julia Morris. The family doctor charged two chickens rather than the customary one chicken for delivering the twins.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was stationed in the southern Philippines. He was discharged in 1946. He married Thelma Petersen in Durango in the early 1950s. He worked from the time he was seven years old on the farm, and when he returned from the war in 1946 he became a dairy farmer.
Johnny loved to go to the casino to gamble and visit with friends. In his younger days he loved to dance, and was considered a pretty good dancer. He was a regular at the Wild Horse almost every Saturday night. Years ago, he and his twin brother were in a band, and he loved to play the harmonica, accordion, guitar, piano, and organ.
He is preceded in death by his spouse, Thelma, and his longtime friend, Van.
He is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, half-nephews, half-nieces, and their children, many lifetime friends and neighbors, and his loving and devoted caregivers.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Greenmount Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 1 Mercado Street, Suite 270, Durango, CO 81301.
