Obituary for Harold "Bob" Moon

Bob Moon passed away Thursday May 12, 2011, in Durango after a short battle with cancer.

Bob was born on May 3, 1957, in Lake Charles, La., to Henry "Hank" Moon and Sarah Louise Strickland. He grew up in many places, including Japan while his father was in the Air Force. He graduated from Panama City High School in Panama City, Fla., in 1972. Bob joined the Army in 1977 and was stationed in Fort Ord, Calif. In 1986 Bob moved to Durango.

Bob worked on fishing boats, as a welder, and for the last 5 years, with Elam Construction. Bob was actively involved with the VFW Post 4031, volunteering for functions as well as being a member of their Men's Auxiliary. He also loved fishing and hunting, his 1976 Shovelhead, football (Indianapolis Colts), Nascar (Jeff Gordon) and Karaoke. He was known around town as "Willie Bob," since he looked like and sang like Willie Nelson. But most of all Bob loved everyone for who they are and their hearts. Never discriminating or judging, he had a very kind heart. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and adored his grandkids.

Bob was preceded in death by his father Henry Moon and mother Sarah Moon. Bob is survived by the love of his life and partner Suzanne "Sue" Alsum of Durango; his sister and brother-in-law Liz and Rick Bradburn of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; his sister Gail Moon of Wewahitchka, Fla.; his stepchildren Laura Alsum of Durango; Lynn and Daniel Hunter of Bayfield; and Lance Alsum of Bayfield; and grandchildren Kayla Sutherland, Quintan Hunter, Kaydence Hunter, and Alexander Alsum, all of Bayfield.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday June 5, 2011, at the VFW Post 4031, 1550 Main Avenue, Durango, Colorado 81301. In lieu of flowers, a Bob Moon Cancer Fund has been set up at the Bank of the San Juans in Durango to offset medical and funeral expenses.
