William Charles Meiers, of Durango, passed away April 5th, 2015, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. He was 77.
Mr. Meiers was born December 6th, 1937 in Oak Park, IL, to Robert and Mary (Cochran) Meiers. He grew up in Maywood, IL, and attended St. Eulalia Grade School, St. Mel High School, and DePaul University of Chicago. It was in his higher education that he met Trudy. They were married October 3, 1959 in Chicago, IL.
He began employment with the Chicago Fire Department in July of 1965 and retired as a Captain in July of 1998. Bill finished his degree in Fire Science at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He also instructed students at the Chicago Fire Academy.
Though Bill was an exceptional Fireman, he truly excelled at being a father to his 3 outstanding children.
Upon Bill's retirement, he and Trudy moved to Durango in Late 1999. He volunteered at the Methodist Thriftshop, the Animas Fire and Rescue, and the Manna Soup Kitchen. Bill was Constitutional student and lay-scholar. He loved the outdoor care of his Durango home.
He is survived by his children: David Meiers, Susan Meiers, and Linda Mills, a brother: Donald and Karen Meiers, a granddaughter: Amelia, sisters-in-law: Annie Skidmore and Rita Meiers, a cousin: Christine Lamut, many nieces, nephews and extended family and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife Gertrude "Trudy" Meiers, a brother; Robert Meiers, a brother-in-law: Ken Skidmore.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Hospice of Mercy, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or any charity of choice.
Visitation will take place on Friday, April 10, 2015 from 5pm-8pm at Hood Mortuary, 1261 East 3rd Avenue, Durango, CO.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, April 11th, 2015 at 10am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 254 East 5th Avenue, Durango, CO.
