Obituary for Irma J. McNamara

Irma J. McNamara was born in Durango on December 15, 1916, to parents Arthur Henry Ford and Mary Therese Neary Ford Hammer. She passed away peacefully on June 17, 2012, at Sunshine Gardens West.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia F. Brees and Mary Ann Beavers (Dick); grandsons Joseph P. Tibbetts (Liz) and Richard S. Tibbetts; granddaughter Kathryn A. Dole (Ryan); and great grandsons Aidan C. Dole and Wyatt D. Thomas. She was preceded in death by her husband John J. ("Johnny") McNamara and by her siblings, Viola Quintana, Edwin Ford, John Ford, Lester Ford, and Frances Powell.

Irma went to St. Columba Elementary School and graduated from Durango High School in 1936. She worked for Turner Securities and married John in 1940. They lived a short time in California during World War II while John served in the U.S. Navy.

Upon returning to Durango, Irma worked for the La Plata County Clerk's office and later the Everett Monger Adjustment Firm. She retired as practice manager for the Southwest Colorado Mental Health Center when John was critically injured in an electrical accident. She and John spent a great deal of time in Pittsburgh following his subsequent liver transplant.

Irma was devoted to family, friends and faith. She loved picnicking, jeeping and camping, in both the Colorado mountains and the Utah canyonlands. She also loved flowers and had her own small rose garden (although a small herd of deer would beg to differ). She was an excellent cook.

Irma was a past member of the Catholic Daughters of America, St. Columba's Altar and Rosary Society and the Colorado Mental Health Professional Office Manager's Association. She was also a charter and active member of the Durango Sewing Club founded in 1940. In addition, she was a recipient of Rotary's Paul Harris Award.

Visitation will occur from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012, at St. Columba Catholic Church, 1830 E. Second Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2012, at St. Columba Catholic Church, and graveside services will be at Greenmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory be made to St. Columba School. Students Fund.
