Matt McKown, age 34, passed away suddenly at home last week. He had worked at Olde Tymer’s Café for the past 9 years. He is survived by his mother, Jean Flymen also of Durango.
Matt and his mother moved to Durango in 1984. He attended Excel School, graduating in 1998 where he excelled in math, computers and acting. At one time he taught computers and also coached football at the school, because the teachers didn’t understand the rules or nuances of the game. He even taught his mother the game of football, so they could discuss games together, despite the fact that he was a Raiders fan and his mother was a Chiefs fan.
Matt loved animals and they loved him as well. His kind, gentle, playful nature, whether at work or home, or just “cruising Main” (as he called it and always on Saturdays!), endeared him to those who knew him.
He loved Durango and said numerous times that he would never leave. Durango will be poorer without him.
A celebration of his life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2014 in the clubhouse at the Durango Regency Mobile Home Park (#6 Mulberry Way, Hermosa). Visitors are invited to share memories or anecdotes of his life. In lieu of flowers an account has been set up to help meet the family’s final expenses, in memory of Matt McKown under Linda Jean Flymen, at the Bank of Colorado, 1199 Main Avenue, Durango, Colorado 81301.
