Obituary for
Donald D. McCoy
Donald Dean McCoy died Friday, December 2, 2011, at his home in Bayfield, Colo. He was 74.
”Donnie,” as he was known to his friends, family and co-workers, was born in Bayfield and was fifth generation native to La Plata County. He embraced his family and his life in his home town and was gratefully employed by La Plata Electric as a meter technician for 47 years. Mr. McCoy was an accomplished athlete at Bayfield High School and briefly attended Ft. Lewis College on a scholarship at its Hesperus campus, before it was moved to Durango.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Juanel McCoy (Harris), and parents William Earl McCoy and Laura Mae McCoy (Grobecker).
He is survived by Earleen Carroll (sister) of Farmington, N.M., Thedra McDowell (daughter) of Clayton, N.M., Donnel Gonzales (daughter) of Bayfield, Colo., Derek McCoy (son) of Bayfield, Brett McDowell (grandson) of Bourne, Texas, Beau McDowell (grandson) of Red River, N.M., Matt Gonzales (grandson) of Bayfield, Monica Gonzales (granddaughter) of Lubbock, Texas, and Kayla McCoy (granddaughter) and Kelton McCoy (grandson) of Bayfield.
A service for Mr. McCoy will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the Bayfield Church of Christ in Bayfield. Burial will occur after the service at Pine River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Donnie’s name to the Lavenia McCoy library in Bayfield, Colorado.
