James P. McCann
James Price McCann, 79, died Friday, July 08, 2011 north of Durango, Colorado. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango.
Mr. McCann was born February 12, 1932 in Tulsa, Oklahoma the son of Kenneth and Lorene McCann. Jim was reared by his grandparents in Springfield, Missouri, Dr. James P. McCann and his wife Mary. The family then moved to Ozark, Missouri. Jim attended the University of Missouri and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He had participated in the ROTC program during college, and upon graduation, he was commissioned in the U.S. Air force and served roughly four and a half years reaching the rank of lieutenant. While serving in the military, he was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base and flew missions intercepting unidentified aircraft over the Western Pacific Ocean.
Jim was honorably discharged and immediately began working for Ford Motor Company for about 3 years in Detroit, Michigan. He then took a job from Martin Engineering in Florida. He was a test officer during missile launches at Point Mugu in California. He then went to work for Ling-Temco-Vought (aerospace) for several years.
In a surprising career change, Jim began working for Merrill Lynch Investments as a stock broker and manager. He worked for Merrill Lynch for 28 years while simultaneously operating a Hobie-Cat Sales dealership in Winterpark, Florida. He retired and moved to Durango in the Late 1970's.
Jim has been extremely involved in the Durango Chapter 997 of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and had served with the Durango Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed time and travel with his brother, Bob and Bob’s wife, Charlene, to Alaska and Europe. Most recently Bob and Jim have traveled to Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Italy on a museum and gallery tour, and while traveling, had purchased an electric version of the plane he was piloting on Friday, when he died.
He is survived by Bob & Charlene McCann (brother) of Cumming, GA, Robert McCann, Jr. (nephew) of Madison, WI, Renee Shelton (neice) of West Palm Beach, FL, and Perry McCann (nephew) of West Palm Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his mother Lorene McCann, and his father Kenneth McCann.
