Mary Ruth Krause (Pool)

Mary Ruth Krause (Pool), 77, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022, at home in Durango, Colorado, following a recent illness.

Mary Ruth was born November 30, 1944, to William C. Pool and Sarah Jeanette Pool in Thorndale, Texas. Her family moved to Austin, Texas in 1945 when her father, William C. Pool, returned from military service.

Mary Ruth graduated from San Marcos Baptist Academy in 1961, before attending UT Austin for one year. She then transferred to Southwest Texas to complete her degree in the Home Economics Department.

Mary Ruth began her teaching career at Ball Middle School where she met her late husband Henry Fred Krause (April 23, 1942 – February 11, 2016). They married shortly after in 1968. Mary then went on to teach math at Seguin High School for many years, before retiring in 1998 from Harlandale High School in San Antonio, TX. Throughout her career she dedicated her time serving as an academic decathlon coach for her students’ extracurricular activities. She was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin.

Mary Ruth later moved to Durango, Colorado with her late husband, Henry. There she enjoyed the beauty nature offered in each changing season, and relished time spent outdoors with pets Fritza, Sassy, Mala, Bert, and Ernie. She loved to watch colorful hummingbirds zip to and from her back porch while she filled her home with delectable meals to share with her neighborhood community.

Mary Ruth served chairperson of the North County Planning committee from 2020 until her passing, ensuring the beauty and character of the north (La Plata) county area (i.e., north of Durango along the 550 corridor) was maintained and protected for all to enjoy by convening committee meetings to review development proposals and ensuring the voice of residents of North La Plata county were heard by the planning commission and developers.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Sarah Jeannette and William C. Pool, and husband, Henry Fred Krause.

Mary Ruth is survived by her three sons Aaron (Dawn) Krause of Seguin, TX, Jeremy Krause of San Marcos, TX and Neal (Joanna) Krause of Bentonville, AR; 4 grandchildren Amelia (Clayton) Allen, Levi Henry Krause, and Bodhi and Milo Krause; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Memorial Celebration for Mary Ruth Krause will be held on Monday, November 21, at 3PM, at The Nugget in Durango, Colorado.
