Obituary for
Elsie W. Martinez
Former Ignacio resident Elsie Watts Martinez died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, in Albuquerque. She was 79.
Mrs. Martinez was born Dec. 24, 1931, in Ignacio. She attended the Indian Boarding School in Ignacio and spent most of her childhood there. She was an enrolled member and elder of the Southern Ute Tribe. On March 1, 1954, she married Jack Martinez in Durango.
Mrs. Martinez and her family lived and worked in Cortez and Towaoc. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and reading. "She was strong and quiet-mannered," her daughter Mitzi Doezie said.
Mrs. Martinez is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jack Martinez, of Cortez; daughters Andrea Bishop of Cortez and Mitzi Doezie of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Richard Martinez, of San Diego; sisters Judy Frank of Towaoc and Katherine Ridley of White Rocks, Utah; brother Terry Knight of Towaoc; brothers and sisters Elwood, Phoebe, Beulah and Richard Kent of Ignacio; five grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and numerous extended family members.
Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 9, 2011, at Hood Mortuary, 1261 East Third Ave. A funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at the Southern Ute Memorial Chapel, 258 Ute Road in Ignacio. Her brother Terry Knight will officiate.
Burial will take place afterward at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.
