Eduvigen "Eddie" Manzanares
Eduvigen “Eddie” Manzanares, 90, of Durango, Colo., passed away Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Four Corners Health Care Center.
Mr. Manzanares was born October 31, 1921, in Turley, N.M., to Alfredo and Ursulita Vallejos. He served in the C.C.C. prior to serving in the U.S. Army from June 7, 1942, to February 1947, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He won the Purple Heart, as well as other campaign medals.
He married Elzira Trujillo on July 27, 1943, and they had two sons, Richard and Tom. He worked as an auto mechanic for many years, and was a radio disc jockey with KIUP on the Spanish Music Show for 27 years. He played music with his brothers, The Vallejos, and later he formed another band, The Aces. He played several musical instruments in The Aces and the band toured throughout New Mexico, Colorado and Utah.
Mr. Manzanares is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elzira "Elsie" Manzanares, siblings Ronald Vallejos, Gilbert Vallejos, Mary Martinez, Douglas Vallejos and Jane Hazen.
He is survived by his sons Richard (Teresa) Manzanares of Salt Lake City, and Tom (Margaret) Manzanares of Ignacio, Colo.; siblings: Lloyd Vallejos of Washington State, Martha Herrera of Magna, Utah; Joe Vallejos of Kearns, Utah; Esther Herrera of Magna; Teresa Herrera of Magna, Fred Vallejos of Aztec, N.M., Johnny Vallejos of Taylorsville, Utah; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at St. Columba Catholic Church in Durango. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery.
