Obituary for Richard W. "Dick" Mackiewicz

Richard W. (Dick) Mackiewicz, 87, Bayfield, Colorado, passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes at his son-in-law and daughter’s home on August 30, 2011.

Born April 11, 1924 to Helen and Wesley Mackiewicz in Irvington, New Jersey, Richard was the eldest of three with a brother Thaddeous (Ted) E. Mackiewicz and sister Jean (Mackiewicz) Anderson. A graduate of Cranford High School in New Jersey, he enlisted in the Navy during WWII, piloted a PB2Y Coronado and was honorably discharged in 1946. He then went on to college and graduated Seton Hall University. He met MaryAnn Kryston, and within a week they were engaged marrying on September 2, 1950. Together they had three children who they raised at their home on St. Joseph Drive in Stirling, New Jersey. Richard’s career culminated with his Directorship at the Navy Exchange, and while in the Navy’s employ he traveled the world to cities and ports in Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. Oftentimes while watching TV or reading a magazine he would see distant places and quip, “I was there!” Following retirement from the Navy Exchange he relocated from his native New Jersey to Bayfield, Colorado, where for the past 15 years Richard touched many in the community with his unquenchable zest for life, passion for gardening and keen interests in airplanes, travel, music and southwest culture. He is remembered by family as a devoted husband to MaryAnn, a kind, patient, loving father, and a man who saw the beauty and good in all persons and things.

Richard is survived by his children and their spouses, Mariellen (Mackiewicz) Walz, Joseph Walz, Luanne (Mackiewicz) Bershaw, Craig Bershaw, Richard W. Mackiewicz, Jr. and Geralyn Mackiewicz, his granddaughter Lillianne Bershaw and brother Ted. He was preceded in death by his wife MaryAnn (1987) and sister Jean (1997).

The family wishes to acknowledge and express gratitude to all those who gave care and comfort to Richard especially Bruce E. Andrea, M.D.

Services in Colorado are being arranged by Hood Mortuary, Durango with a viewing and Catholic funeral mass on September 10, 2011 starting at 11:00 am at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Ignacio, Colorado. The family also plans a mass on September 24, 2011 at 11:00 am at the St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Chapel in Haskel, New Jersey. The Chapel will be rededicated to the memory of both Richard and MaryAnn Mackiewicz.

Richard will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife MaryAnn at the St. Vincent De Paul cemetery in Stirling, New Jersey.
