Mr. John Kugle, age 77, passed away at Mercy Hospice House on Sunday, July 11, 2021, with family by his side. John was born in Park Ridge, IL in 1943. His family moved to Bayfield in the early 1950’s where they owned and operated Kugle Equipment, a Texaco service station and International Harvester dealer that supported the Pine River Valley for many years. John graduated from Bayfield High School in 1961 and served in the Colorado National Guard.
John was a long-time fixture in the Bayfield community. In the 1970’s he served as fire chief for the Upper Pine Fire Protection District; he worked for the town of Bayfield as the town’s public works director; and served on the Bayfield School Board. He also drove the school bus, and as a strong supporter of school athletics, he drove the activity bus to out of town games.
Since a teen, John had worked in the auto parts business. Through his years at the Auto Parts Palace in Durango, NAPA stores in Durango, Bayfield, and Salome Arizona, he developed many long-lasting friendships.
John loved so much the beauty of southwestern Colorado. He spent many of his summer weekends with his family four-wheeling in the high country, camping in the mountains north of Vallecito, or on a sandy cove along Navajo Lake. John built a small cabin cruiser, which the family took to Lake Powell for many vacations.
He was a passionate Denver Bronco fan, loved watching NASCAR, and socializing with friends. Those who knew and loved him will remember his thoughtfulness, resourcefulness, and charm. His wife, Barbara says she is most grateful that he taught his sons a good work ethic.
He is survived by his wife Barbara of 53 years and their three sons: Tracy (Trish), Troy (Jessie), and Matt (Jamie); six grandchildren: Brenden, Sadie, Shaylee, Evan, Riley, and Zantha; his brother Roger and sister Georgiana. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 28th, 2021 at the Riverside RV Park in Bayfield, from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
